West Devon U12s v South Devon U12s 2011
West Devon Under 12s v South Devon Under 12s

Sunday 8th May, Whitchurch Cricket Club

South Devon 157 all out (W Christophers 53, L Price 22; B Grove 2-10, J Hagan-Burt 2-15) beat West Devon 143 all out (M Petherbridge 59, A Turner 23; W Christophers 5-12, P Hicks 2-15, M Churchill 2-18) by 14 runs

An amazing match! After 6 overs the West were 6 for 6 chasing the South’s 157 all out, and all of those 6 were extras!  With the top six in the hutch all with 0 next to their name it needed something a bit special to make a game of it. A 7th wicket partnership of 31 between Jamie Bailey (15) and Matthew Petherbridge started to make the score look respectable. What followed was most unexpected as Petherbridge was joined by Alfie Turner (23). Sensible, no risk batting saw them nudge the score up slowly but as they gained confidence they started to play more shots with Petherbridge being particularly severe on anything short. He brought up his 50 with a scampered single off his 84th ball.  With 3 overs remaining the West needed 17 to win and it looked like the miracle was about to happen. But cometh the hour cometh the man and the South had their man in Will Christophers, who not only scored an excellent, hard hitting 53 in the South’s innings but finished with figures of 8-6-12-5 and was the man responsible for finally getting Petherbridge out with a fast in-swinging yorker for a career best 59, an innings containing 9 fours off his 92 balls faced.

Earlier the South had posted 157 all out. Opener Christophers faced 68 balls for his 50 which included 9 fours. Luke Price was the next highest scorer with 22. Ben Grove kept wicket for the first 20 overs, taking 2 good catches before removing the pads and then taking 2 wickets for 10 runs. Joe Hagan- Burt also took 2 wickets.

So a game that looked like it was going to be over very early ended up being a nail biter. A game dominated by two players, the superb Will Christophers who not only bowls fast and straight but also hits the ball very hard and the dogged, competitive and mature Petherbridge who showed the top order what can be done if you play with determination and thought.

A big thank you to Whitchurch CC who produced an excellent pitch and outfield despite last night’s downpour and an even better tea.  A big thank you also for their continued support of the DCBYA regional games which they have supported for many years.
